Episode 79: Archangel Elisa and the Creeping Shadow

I had the two chapters translated for a while now, I just forgot to upload them. Also I doubt they’re edited properly. So if you find errors do mention.

“Is it alright if we order the course?”

“U… umm!”

The two of us came for lunch. I was familiar with this place since I had visited it several times before with my master, Abby, and myself before enrolling, but Elisa seemed oddly fidgety.

I had to take the lead here. So, I spoke to Elisa in a gentle voice.

“It’s okay. You don’t need to worry too much about etiquette.”

“U-um… but, is Ray-kun used to places like this?”

“Well, I’ve been taken around by my master for a long time.”

“…I see. That Lydia-san, um… she’s still active as a researcher, right?”

“Yeah. I hear she’s currently working on research about Qualia. I don’t know much about it, but do you know about it, Elisa?”

“Qualia… I know a bit, but, um… I think it’s still just a hypothesis. In the code theory, there’s talk that a substance called qualia operates during the processing stages… something about whether there are further processes in the code or not.”

“You’re quite insightful, Elisa. You might become a researcher who surpasses my master someday.”

“W-who, me!? I’m still far from that!”

Elisa waved her hands in front of her, but I didn’t think that was boasting at all.

“No, my master said that you understand the book on the dual code theory. I think you have plenty of talent.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

As we talked, the appetizers began to arrive one after another.

We savored them and finished our lunch with dessert.

“Did you enjoy it, Elisa?”

“Y-yes! It was super delicious! Thank you, Ray-kun!”

“No, thank you. I’m glad I could repay you for that time.”

Elisa was smiling the whole time and laughing a lot. If she was enjoying herself, then it was worth treating her.

After I paid the bill, as soon as we stepped out of the restaurant, Elisa bowed her head.

“Thank you for the meal, Ray-kun. It was really delicious! Thanks for treating me!”

“Ugh… Elisa…”

I couldn’t help but hold back tears, pressing my fingers to my eyes.

In the past, it was always, “Hey, Ray. Let’s go for sushi on your dime!” “Hey, Ray. Let’s have meat on your money! Meat!” “Hey, Ray. You’ve been making quite a bit of money lately, haven’t you? Why not treat the master to some drinks?” My master had always been quite demanding.

Of course, my master never thanked me for treating her. She would just laugh and say, “That was tasty! Hahaha!” and order more drinks. Even when I tried to remind her, she would just glare at me, silencing me.

But look at this.

Just for treating her, she bowed her head and thanked me so politely.

Truly, she was the Archangel Elisa.

Compared to my gorilla of a master, I was moved to tears by Elisa’s sanctity.

It felt as if the days of that time were being purified…

When I shared this, Elisa gave a wry smile.

“Ah, haha… Ray-kun, you had a tough time, huh?”

“Yeah. I think you know my master as Ainsworth well, but person guy is basically like a gorilla. She’s really hopeless at anything other than magic…”

In that moment, I sensed a killing intent.

I quickly turned around. But there was no one there. However, I was certain that someone had been coming to kill me. It felt like a sign of magic… especially something I rarely encountered even during the Far East War… it felt like the first material of a Grand Magus was flowing.

But, there was no one.

Was it my imagination? No, could it be…? Just then, Abby appeared from around the corner.

“Abby-san? What are you doing here?”

“Ray and Elisa Griffith, huh. Well, I just had a little encounter with some troublemakers. I was just wrapping things up in that alley over there. A bit of killing intent slipped out.”

“I see. So it was you, Abby. I was surprised. To think that kind of killing intent would leak out in broad daylight.”

“Damn… that Lydia… you owe me one…”

Abby-san muttered something I couldn’t quite catch.

“Abby-san? Is something wrong?”

“No, it’s nothing. Enjoy your date, Ray! See you!”

For some reason, Abby seemed unusually flustered as she tossed her hair and left briskly.

“Well then, shall we go, Elisa?”

“Huh…!? Oh, yeah!”

“What’s wrong? Your face is red. Could it be heatstroke? Be careful; the summer sun is no joke. Do you want to take a break?”

“N-No, I’m fine! Let’s go!”

“Is that so? If you’re not feeling well, please tell me immediately.”

“Y-Yeah!”

As I tried to move forward with the red-faced Elisa, it seemed that there were quite a lot of people around. If we continued like this, we would easily get lost.

“Elisa.”

“What is it, Ray-kun?”

“Let’s hold hands.”

“H-Hold hands!?”

“Yeah. If we keep going like this, we’ll get separated.”

“Oh… um, okay… yes.”

I took Elisa’s left hand, and we headed towards the bookstore.

There are many bookstores in the central district of this kingdom, so we visited various places. Elisa recommended several spots and also told me about various books she liked. I introduced some of my favorite books to Elisa, and we enjoyed a brief moment together.

And then, at dusk.

Wrapped in the twilight light, Elisa and I sat together on a bench in a nearby park.

Since then, we talked about books, and it seemed that Elisa was interested in the antimatter code I used, so I explained it to her in detail.

The antimatter code was something my master discovered but couldn’t use.

As of now, I’m the only one in this world who can actually use the antimatter code.

So, our conversation about the double code theory, which Elisa was very interested in, became quite lively. Before we knew it, the sun was about to set.

“Elisa, here’s a drink.”

“Thank you, Ray-kun.”

I handed Elisa the drink I bought.

“I had a great time today. Thank you, Elisa, for spending this precious summer vacation day with me.”

“I had a really great time too! Talking with you, Ray-kun, is really… so interesting! And the talk about the double code theory was very enlightening! I never imagined that Ray-kun would be the only sorceror in the world who can use it. I feel so lucky to be able to hear from someone like you. Thank you again!”

“If it’s about this topic, I could talk forever. If it benefits you, Elisa, I’m more than happy to help.”

When I said that, Elisa took a small paper bag out of her bag.

“What’s that?”

“Actually, I baked some cookies… Since you treated me to lunch, I thought I’d bring some sweets for later… But, haha, it’s already dusk, but… will you eat them?”

“Of course! I’d love to.”

I took the cookies Elisa made and put one in my mouth. Then, tears began to well up again.

“Uuuu… so delicious. It’s really good, Elisa…”

“Wha…!? Was it that delicious that it made you cry!?”

“No, it’s because of your kindness. I’m always moved by your kindness.”

“Hahaha… Ray-kun, you cry a lot, don’t you?”

“Yeah. I’m touched by your warmth. When I think about the days with that gorilla master, I can’t help it.”

“I-I see… but, um, I’m glad. If it was delicious, then I’m happy I made them!”

“Yeah. Well then, Elisa, see you again.”

“Yeah! I had a great time today, Ray-kun! Bye-bye!”

As we both stood up, we headed home in different directions.

Since we were going in opposite directions, I had to say goodbye to Elisa, but I had a wonderful time.

Feeling good, I started humming a tune when I suddenly saw some familiar faces coming around the corner.

“Whoa…! Is that Master and Cara-san? What a coincidence to see you here!”

“Oh! Ray! What a coincidence! Ah! What an incredible coincidence!”

“Huh? Well, it is a coincidence, but what brings you here? Do you have some business here?”

When I said that, Cara-san answered.

“We came to the city to shop today, and we were just taking a stroll.”

“I see. What a coincidence.”

“Alright! So, shall we go grab a meal, Ray? Of course, today’s on me!”

“On you…? Master, what’s going on? Did you hit your head or something? Or did you eat something weird? It’s strange that you’re not trying to stick to me like usual.”

“Oh… I see how you think of me now.”

“Master is a beautiful person with no secrets!”

“Very well. Then let’s go.”

“Yes!”

And so, the three of us headed out to have dinner.

By the way, it was really rare for Master to treat me, but… I never figured out why until the very end.[TN: But, we do!]
