yay, a wild chapter appeared!
Chapter 11: The Meeting Always Takes a Twist
After informing Ryoji and the others about the canceled class, Charlotta hurried back to the academy. As she burst through the door and returned to the staff room, several instructors looked at her with puzzled expressions and approached her.
“Is something wrong? Is there a problem?”
“I need to convene an emergency staff meeting immediately! Can you gather all the staff? We need to reach a conclusion today and bring it up at the next faculty meeting!”
Understanding the urgency of the situation from Charlotta’s expression, the staff quickly gathered everyone within about thirty minutes to start the emergency meeting.
Present were Charlotta, the homeroom teacher of the special class, nine homeroom teachers from the general course, and twenty part-time instructors. It was the first time in ten years that everyone had assembled like this since a death occurred at the academy.
“Charlotta-sensei, we’ve gathered for the emergency staff meeting, but could you please tell us what it’s about? You even called me in on my day off, so it must be something significant, right?”
“Of course. The students in my special class, Ryoji and his friends, have cleared the beginner explorer dungeon.”
At Charlotta’s words, the room fell silent. While a few looked shocked, most cast suspicious glances. Among them, Camille Antremont, who was particularly skeptical, twisted her mouth and asked,
“Is that really true? The beginner explorer dungeon was managed by the royal family, which the academy has taken over. It is said that ‘the beginner explorer dungeon was cleared by the founding king Amadeo Sandstrom, and while the final large room is known for a massive outbreak of monsters, it is generally not lethal.’ Are you saying that Ryoji Uchino cleared that dungeon?”
“Yes, that’s correct, Camille-sensei. Ryoji and Elizabeth’s party cleared the beginner explorer dungeon. They defeated the two-headed dragon that resided in the challenge room beneath the large room.”
“I find that hard to believe. Do you have any evidence?”
Several instructors nodded in agreement with Camille’s doubtful voice. Charlotta took out the Flame Sword that she had received from Ryoji and infused it with magical power. The Flame Sword, charged with magic, emitted flames more intense than a typical fire-element magic sword, capturing everyone’s attention.
“This is the Flame Sword that Ryoji received as a reward. In addition, they also obtained mithril ore, a dragon’s magic stone, and a treasure chest from the two-headed dragon, which contained an uncountable amount of gold coins and jewels. Furthermore, they brought back around 2,300 gold coins from the final room. I’ve advised Ryoji not to use this reward, so you can rest assured.”
“Such a reward… Then we should urgently bring this up at the faculty meeting. It’s a significant achievement by the students after a long time. The agenda for the faculty meeting was Professor Reynold’s ‘Future Developments of Teleportation Magic Circles’ and your ‘Considerations on Elemental Magic,’ right? Given the priority, your topic will have to be postponed to the next meeting. Your paper will have to wait for its moment in the spotlight.”
“I don’t mind at all. My students have achieved results. That is the true joy of being a teacher. Now, everyone, I will withdraw my presentation from the faculty meeting and instead report on Ryoji and his friends’ clearing of the beginner explorer dungeon.”
Charlotta lightly brushed off Camille’s sarcasm as she announced the change in agenda for the faculty meeting.
The day after the canceled class, Ryoji was called by Charlotta to the staff room.
“We will discuss Ryoji and his friends’ dungeon clearing at the next faculty meeting.”
“The faculty meeting? So, we will report on the clearing of the beginner explorer dungeon there. Should I hand over the clearing rewards? No, maybe I should keep them… By the way, what about the two-headed dragon? Should we present it together?”
“Fufu, that’s an interesting thought. I know Ryoji’s item box is special, but there’s no way a large monster like the two-headed dragon could fit inside, right? Thank you for easing my tension. I shouldn’t make my students worry.”
As Charlotta responded to Ryoji, she felt her mood lighten. Realizing she was more nervous than she had anticipated, she took Ryoji’s words as a joke and expressed her gratitude.
“I have a question for you, Charlotta-sensei. The academy’s rules state that ‘the academy will collect ten percent of the value obtained from the beginner explorer dungeon.’ What will happen in this case?”
“This time is a special circumstance, and the amount is substantial. The collection will be decided at the faculty meeting. But don’t worry! I will ensure that the amount Ryoji earned will not be collected beyond the regulations! Leave it to me!”
In response to Ryoji’s question, Charlotta stood tall and answered with conviction.
“Now, regarding the agenda from the emergency staff meeting about ‘Clearing the Beginner Explorer Dungeon by the Special Class,’ I will have Camille report on behalf of the group. First, the rewards include 5,000 gold coins and numerous jewels, 10 kilograms of mithril ore, 15 dragon magic stones, and two magical tools. The emergency staff meeting proposes that we award special medals to Ryoji, the hero of Drugul, and Miss Elizabeth, along with their party members.”
As the faculty meeting commenced, Camille, who had been casting suspicious glances at Charlotta throughout the emergency staff meeting, spoke as the representative. While there were many voices of praise for Ryoji and his companions, Charlotta felt uncomfortable with Camille’s candidacy as the presenter, using her years of service as leverage. However, she listened to the presentation with relief, as the content was acceptable.
However, the proposal to award special medals had not been discussed in the emergency staff meeting, and Charlotta tilted her head in confusion at Camille’s report. Her expression changed when Professor Theodore Decker, a member of the faculty, spoke up.
“Then, let’s award medals to Ryoji and the other members who cleared the Beginner Explorer Dungeon, and let’s set the academy’s collection at 3,000 gold coins, along with jewels, ores, and magic stones.”
“Wait a moment! The academy’s rules state that ‘the academy collects one-tenth of what is obtained in the Beginner Explorer Dungeon!'”
“Stop speaking without permission. What are you saying, Charlotta-sensei? Even if the academy collects 3,000 gold coins and other items, 2,000 coins will remain in hand, so what’s the problem? Or did Ryoji ask you ‘Please ensure that you have golds left over?’ Is that why a reward is being prepared?”
“Please don’t say such rude things! I am saying that Ryoji and the others should receive their rightful rewards!”
Charlotta interjected, unable to contain herself at Theodore’s outrageous proposal. She had intended to apologize and calmly express her opinion, but Camille’s remark about ‘receiving a bribe’ made her emotional.
“Are you angry because I hit the nail on the head? Anyway! We are in the middle of a faculty meeting. Charlotta-sensei, please refrain from making hasty statements. Professor Theodore, I apologize for the disturbance.”
“It’s fine. Charlotta-sensei is still young. I wonder what you think, Professor Reynold, who has been silent until now? Do you have any words regarding the achievements of the hero of Drugul, whom you care for? This is a matter of contributing a large sum for the academy’s development, but if we can reduce the amount, perhaps a reward will come from the hero of Drugul?”
Reynold, prompted by Theodore, frowned in displeasure as he prepared to speak, but the academy headmaster, Christofer, interjected first.
“First, please convey my congratulations to Ryoji for clearing the Beginner Explorer Dungeon. As expected of someone I have high hopes for. While I understand Professor Theodore’s opinion, I also believe that the special rewards for the Beginner Explorer Dungeon should be used for the academy. Mithril ore and dragon magic stones are top-quality research materials. If Ryoji needs the materials, he can buy them.”
“I can’t believe the greed of these materialistic fools…”
Reynold muttered quietly at Christofer’s statement, then smiled at the visibly frustrated Charlotta before turning to Theodore.
“Before responding to Professor Theodore’s proposal, I want to say that clearing the Beginner Explorer Dungeon is indeed an achievement worthy of the hero of Drugul. My heartfelt congratulations. Regarding Professor Theodore’s opinion, I agree with Charlotta-sensei’s stance that ‘Ryoji should receive his rightful rewards.’ The academy’s rules state that ‘the academy collects one-tenth of what is obtained in the Beginner Explorer Dungeon.’ Earlier, the headmaster stated that ‘the special rewards for the Beginner Explorer Dungeon should be used for the academy,’ but that is absurd and not worth discussing. When did the faculty meeting become a gathering of money-hungry individuals?”
“Watch your words! Even if you are the head professor, that is exceedingly rude! Reynold!”
“Rather than my words, let’s call Ryoji here and hear what he has to say. What if he refuses?”
“Even if he is called a hero, should we really consider a student’s opinion? Very well. Please bring Ryoji here.”
Theodore accepted Reynold’s suggestion with a scoff and instructed the staff.
Ryoji, who had been told to wait in the staff room, felt all eyes on him as he entered the conference room. Without worrying about the gazes, he scanned the room and noticed Charlotta biting her lip in frustration and Camille watching her with a pleased expression. With a calm demeanor, Ryoji was approached by Reynold, who spoke with a wry smile.
“Ryoji, it has been decided that you will receive a special medal. However, there is a dispute regarding the amount to be collected for the special rewards from the Beginner Explorer Dungeon. Professor Theodore and the headmaster are insisting that ‘all mithril ore, dragon magic stones, and jewels be collected, along with 3,000 gold coins.’ By the way, if you need the materials, it seems you can buy them. I would like to hear your opinion on this matter.”
“What do Charlotta-sensei and Professor Reynold think?”
“We’re going to collect ’10 percent’ as per the regulations. Even that will bring in a substantial amount of money. For the academy, a 10 percent cut would be an incredible bonus.”
“What the heck is that? It’s a rip-off.”
As Ryoji muttered this while looking around at the members of the faculty meeting, he caught the gaze of Christofer, the academy headmaster. Christofer nodded grandly, as if to say, “I know your answer. You agree with my opinion.” Unable to muster a smile, Ryoji turned his gaze to Theodore, who approached him with a patronizing expression.
“I think even 2,000 gold coins is a lot of money, but do you really need that much? Even if you are the hero of Drugul, you’re still just an 11-year-old child. I don’t think you have any use for it.”
“Thank you for your concern. However, I have been appointed as a noble count by King Marcel. As part of my duties as a noble, I am considering poverty alleviation measures with Lady Elizabeth, and I plan to use this reward as funding. Of course, I also intend to build a research facility for the academy.”
“I-I think that’s a commendable idea, but first, let’s have the academy hold onto it and take our time to think about its use! Does everyone agree? We will now move to a vote by majority!”
Theodore, feeling as if he were being told how low his level was by Ryoji’s polite response, abruptly ended the conversation with a strained voice and attempted to proceed to a decision by vote.
“I’ve heard the discussion. It seems there is some commotion, yes? Shall I lend a hand?”
“Wha—! Duke Harold Coltezis! Why are you here?”
As all eyes turned to the voice that came from the entrance of the conference room, Harold entered with a pleased expression. Watching the faculty members panic at the sudden appearance of a prominent figure from the kingdom, Harold nodded in satisfaction and briefly glanced at Ryoji before addressing the others.
“Someone asked, ‘Why are you here?’ I came because I received word from my daughter that she conquered a beginner explorer dungeon. However, we royal family members should have the right to participate in the faculty meeting, shouldn’t we? I didn’t receive an invitation from anyone. And I have a question: why is only Ryoji here?”
“Ryoji-kun is here as the representative of the conquerors. T-There are no ulterior motives.”
Upon hearing Christofer’s response, Harold nodded with a look of mild discontent and placed a hand on Ryoji’s shoulder as he spoke.
“I hear you conquered a beginner explorer dungeon. The hero of Drugul certainly knows how to make a splash. Did Elizabeth not get in the way?”
“Not at all. Thanks to her, I was able to clear it. By the way, Elizabeth has gotten herself a boyfriend. Have you received that news?”
“Ah, yes. We are set to meet next week.”
Seeing Harold nod with a wry smile, Ryoji asked with a mischievous expression,
“Did Elizabeth not say, ‘Our statuses are different’?”
“Ah, she did say that. But status doesn’t matter. If the two of them have decided on this, I will bless it. The only regret is that I couldn’t become a parent to Ryoji.”
The faculty members, except for Reynold, who was unaware of the relationship between Ryoji and Harold and was listening to their friendly conversation, turned pale and began questioning Ryoji.
“Is Ryoji-kun close with the duke?”
“What a silly question to ask. Ryoji and I are best friends. And it’s not just me. The head court magician Hermann, Cardinal Ralph, and the commander of the royal knights, Theopaldo, are also friends. Not to mention Princess Elena and King Marcel. It’s a well-known story in the noble world, but it shouldn’t be a problem if you don’t know. Unlike Ryoji and Reynold, you are not nobles.”
Harold answered in place of Ryoji with an expression that seemed to say, “What a silly question to ask.” One of the professors who had asked the question looked pale and seemed about to faint. The other members who hadn’t asked questions, along with Theodore and Christofer, also looked uneasy.
“So, what was the topic of discussion today?”
“N-No, about that…”
Camille tried to respond to Harold’s inquiry, but she was shocked by Ryoji’s social connections and could hardly bring herself to say, “They were trying to confiscate all the materials and a large sum of money.” Without caring about Camille’s inner turmoil, Harold approached her with a blank expression and urged her to continue speaking.
“Speak quickly.”
“Y-yes, of course. At the faculty meeting, there was a proposal to confiscate all the materials that Ryoji-kun received as a special reward for clearing the beginner explorer dungeon, along with 3,000 gold coins. We were just about to hold a vote by majority! I, of course, believe that Ryoji-kun’s rewards should be rightfully received!”
Receiving Harold’s intense gaze, Camille could neither look away nor seek help, and she divulged everything. Ignoring her, Harold frowned and turned to Ryoji to confirm.
“Is what you just said true? Is Ryoji okay with this?”
“I have a distrust of the faculty council that would bend the rules to confiscate rewards that someone risked their life to obtain. The poverty measures I was planning to implement as a count also need to be revised. I was supposed to collaborate with Miss Elizabeth on this.”
“I see. They think that since Ryoji is not yet an adult, he won’t be able to argue back, and they plan to manipulate him with their words. It’s quite typical of small-minded people.”
Listening to Ryoji, Harold snorted in amusement and cast a cold glance at the academy head before speaking.
“This matter will be put on hold until we hear from King Marcel. It might be a good idea to do some spring cleaning. Lord Reynold, will you cooperate?”
“I would be happy to help. By the way, Ryoji-kun, you mentioned earlier about building a research facility?”
At Reynold’s casual question, Ryoji grinned mischievously as he replied.
“Yes. Regarding that, I was planning to build it while considering the opinions of Professor Reynold. I intended to create an environment where I could conduct research on teleportation magic circles and other experiments freely, and then transfer it to the academy. The cost would be around 1,000 gold coins.”
“Haha! If you build such a wonderful place, you might end up staying there even more than before instead of returning to the academy.”
Harold watched the conversation between Ryoji and Reynold with a smile. Meanwhile, Christofer and Theodore stood nearby, pale-faced and frozen. Professors who had been at odds with Reynold sensed the impending storm and began to clutch their stomachs or hold their heads in despair.
“It has been a month since that incident. It was a whirlwind of events, and I still can’t fully grasp the current situation. Is it really okay like this?”
“Isn’t it fine? If it’s you, Headmaster Charlotta, you can handle any problem that arises.”
“Exactly! Now that a month has passed and things have settled down, I have a question for Ryoji-kun that I should have asked earlier! Why am I the Headmaster? Professor Reynold undoubtedly has more achievements and popularity, right? There were also several other professors!”
With a wry smile at Charlotta’s question, Ryoji began to explain while recalling the events of the past month.
“That’s a rather late question. Regarding your appointment as Headmaster, you acted with my best interests in mind, didn’t you?”
“Of course! There’s no way a teacher wouldn’t act for their beloved student.”
“That’s the reason.”
“Ryoji-kun! Your explanation is too vague! You’re skipping too much! I demand a full explanation from the start!”
The two were discussing over a meal at Ryoji’s residence, but Charlotta protested against Ryoji’s rough explanation. Ryoji laughed and apologized, then began to explain why Charlotta became the Headmaster.
“──And that’s how it is. Do you understand? The series of events that began with clearing the beginner explorer dungeon ended with the best possible outcome. In particular, the deaths of the former Headmaster Christofer and the professor Theodore were a stroke of luck.”
“They are not dead yet! Everyone is alive! The duke said, ‘Don’t worry. I’ll take care of everything!’ But I understand now why I was appointed as the headmaster.”
As Ryoji continued speaking, he noticed Charlotta’s expression of understanding.
“That’s right! In the end, the biggest issue is the lack of personnel! If we have someone who can give instructions, we can delegate the command structure, right? Headmaster Charlotta had that ability. Just accept it! And while it might sound strange for me to say this again, I want to protest about being made to teach while still being a student!”
“Of course. The academy is severely understaffed. In that situation, if we have someone capable of teaching, we can entrust them with the task, right? You had that ability, Ryoji. Just accept it.”
“Exactly! I just said that! If we don’t gather more personnel soon, I’ll collapse from overwork…”
“Please make a strong request to the duke as well. I can’t do it alone.”
Listening to their exchange with a wry smile, Melta turned to Ryoji as he excitedly asked a question.
“So, Melta-san, my future wife and head maid, what does today’s grueling schedule look like?”
“Yes. Today’s schedule for you, Ryoji-sama, includes three one-hour lectures until noon. After that, you’ll have a one-hour staff meeting during lunch. In the afternoon, there are three one-hour lectures and one practical class. In the evening, there’s a dinner meeting with the duke to discuss poverty measures. The materials are here, so please review them while moving.”
“I joked about it being grueling, but isn’t it actually quite harsh?”
“That’s correct. By the way, tomorrow’s schedule at the academy will be the same, but in the evening, you have meetings with the chief court magician, Herrmann, and Cardinal Ralph. The day after that, there’s a dinner meeting with the commander of the kingdom’s knights, Theobald, and Princess Elena and King Marcel. Princess Elena has also requested, ‘Please make some sweets’ during the dinner.”
“Wait! ‘Requested’? Just say ‘asked’ normally!”
“It might still be easier than what Ryoji has to deal with…”
As Ryoji and Melta exchanged banter, Charlotta felt that her own busyness was less than she had expected.
By evening, the two were in a carriage. Dressed formally, Charlotta looked at Ryoji, who was tilting his head to avoid eye contact. She took his cheeks in her hands and forced him to meet her gaze as she asked, “So, can you tell me why I’m riding in the carriage to the duke’s dinner?”
“Huh? That’s because if the duke has some troublesome request, I can push them… I felt that for you, Headmaster Charlotta, interacting with the nobility is necessary for the academy’s operations.”
“You definitely just said ‘push them,’ didn’t you? Your true feelings are leaking out!”
Upon arriving at the duke’s residence, Ryoji and Charlotta were guided to the dining room by the butler.
“Thank you for coming. Ryoji-sama and Headmaster Charlotta. I hear the chef has put in a lot of effort today. Especially for the sweets, I’ve been told he went all out.”
“Thank you for the invitation. This is a gift for your wife and some sweets for your family to enjoy. We’re considering selling them as a main product from a store that will be opening independently from the street vendors. I can’t guarantee they’ll suit your taste, though.”
“Oh, this is quite a fine gift. My wife has become quite fond of the decorations and sweets that Ryoji brings. I’ve never seen designs like these. Did Ryoji make both the sweets and the decorations?”
“Yes. I’m interested in creating decorative items.”
As Ryoji received compliments on the decorations from Harold, Charlotta casually shifted her gaze to the decorations. Captivated by their beauty, she was taken aback to learn that Ryoji was the creator, leaving her with a look of astonishment at his versatility.
“Please, I really mean it. Duke Harold, I’m on the verge of collapsing from overwork!”
Ryoji and Charlotta were reporting to Harold about the events of the past month while having a meal together. After hearing reports of a severe staff shortage due to a mass resignation of instructors, which had led to many people collapsing from exhaustion, Harold promised to take swift action.
“Well, Ryoji, you seem to be enjoying yourself. Still, is it true that a hero of Drugul like you is already at your wit’s end after just a month?”
“Well, while it’s true that I’m having fun, I can’t deny that I’m feeling overwhelmed.”
As Charlotta admired Ryoji, who was speaking to the high-ranking noble Harold on equal terms, she noticed Harold grinning at them and quickly decided to contribute to the conversation.
“By the way, Ryoji-kun, have you decided how to use the rewards collected by the academy aside from the official ones?”
“Ah, yes. I received a plan from Lady Elizabeth and Lord Orlando. I’ll pass it on to the academy head later, as it concerns the academy as well.”
Curious about Harold’s mention of the academy’s interest, Charlotta had another question that piqued her interest even more.
“Um! Earlier, you referred to him as ‘Lord Orlando.’ Does that mean you’ve acknowledged your relationship with Lady Elizabeth and are now calling him ‘Lord’?”
“Hmm? Ryoji, haven’t you told the academy head? Lord Orlando is the Pope. I would prefer to call him ‘His Holiness Orlando,’ but he refused that title.”
“Ha? I-I apologize for my rudeness!”
Charlotta exclaimed in surprise at Harold’s sudden mention of the Pope. After hurriedly apologizing for raising her voice in front of a high noble, she confirmed her confusion.
“Lord Orlando is the Pope? Huh? Isn’t he supposed to be secluded in the temple praying? What does this mean? Ryoji-kun, did you know about this? I see, that’s why you’re so calm!”
“Headmaster Charlotta, are you confused or calm right now?”
“Of course I’m confused! Lord Orlando is His Holiness! But wait, during the faculty meeting, Duke Harold said something about ‘different statuses,’ didn’t he?”
As Ryoji interjected, Charlotta’s tone became more agitated, prompting Harold to respond instead.
“Ah, I meant that Lady Elizabeth’s status is too low to marry the Pope.”
“Even though she’s a duke’s daughter?”
“Titles don’t matter. To marry the Pope, she must at least become a nun. So, once we start the poverty measures with Ryoji, I plan to send Elizabeth and Lord Orlando to the Papal territory. I hope you can forgive me for the trouble this will cause you, Ryoji.”
“That’s quite sudden. Can I ask why?”
“As I mentioned earlier, it’s to prepare Elizabeth to become a nun. She’ll need training to be recognized as one. During that time, I want Lord Orlando to solidify his position. Marrying the Pope isn’t something that can be done easily. If Lord Orlando weren’t the Pope, it would have been much simpler. They both came to report with such happy faces. Children do leave the nest quickly, don’t they?”
Recalling that moment, Harold sighed with a wry smile. Charlotta, realizing that even a high noble like him could feel like a parent, remembered the pressing situation in front of her and began to speak.
“I bless their journey into the future. However, my current situation is quite dangerous. Could you please tell me more about the measures to resolve the staff shortage? You mentioned earlier that you would ‘take swift action,’ but I need specific plans. At this rate, Ryoji-kun might just run away.”
“I’m not going to run away! It’s still not that bad!”
“I feel an immense anxiety at the word ‘still.'”
As Ryoji stood tall in response to Charlotta’s question, Harold began to explain the personnel replenishment with a wry smile.
“First, we will temporarily reinstate Professor Reynold to the field. Additionally, I plan to summon the team of scholars who conducted deep investigations in the Caves of Trails back to the academy. I will also explain the situation to those running private schools and have them bring their students to the academy. The royal family will cover the costs, so you can rest easy. However, once we have enough faculty members, we will subdivide the current classes and implement a six-year system. The current second-year students will have the freedom to either graduate or continue their studies. Furthermore, we will change the class schedule from six days a week to five, increasing the number of holidays to two. This will help reduce the fatigue of the instructors and allow for more research time. Instructors and professors affiliated with the academy will be given priority to present their research findings based on the content of their classes. How does that sound? Are you satisfied?”
Charlotta’s eyes widened in surprise at Harold’s detailed plan, and she nodded repeatedly, expressing her excitement.
“That’s amazing! All of it is effective! Especially if we can hire those running private schools as instructors; that would be an immediate asset!”
“Most of it was Ryoji’s idea, though. In the future, we will teach not only magic but also swordsmanship and arithmetic. We will likely need to change the name from the Royal Academy of Magic as well. Additionally, those who wish to study further can advance to the graduate school we will be building. In the graduate school, students will present three research papers during their two years at the academy. If recognized by the faculty council, they can be hired as instructors or professors.”
When Charlotta instinctively looked at Ryoji, he flashed a V sign with his index and middle fingers. Although she didn’t understand the gesture, she interpreted his expression as one of pride and asked a simple question.
“Does this mean that regardless of status, if someone is outstanding, they can be recommended for a professorship?”
“That’s right. Even those who become professors through connections like Theodore, or those who are once-in-a-decade geniuses like Reynold, are not the only ones who can become professors. Those who don’t make it can still be hired as instructors or staff if they have the ability. This way, we won’t face a shortage of talent in the future.”
“By the way, what happened to the person who was confronting you, Headmaster Charlotta? I feel like I saw their name among the mass resignations…”
In response to Ryoji’s question, Harold tilted his head, trying to recall, but since he had no specific memory, he decided to explain the fate of those listed.
“I’m not sure if it’s the same person, but I introduced the mass resigners to new workplaces. They are fulfilling jobs. Unlike those two, they can earn their own living. They will have to earn their keep now, after having it easy until now.”
For a brief moment, Charlotta caught a glimpse of Harold’s piercing gaze, but she couldn’t bring herself to ask, “Where were they taken?”
